CTOnews.com, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) A Cruise self-driving taxi encountered an embarrassing accident in San Francisco and strayed into a construction site, with the front wheel stuck in wet concrete that had just been poured.

The accident of the self-driving car based on the Chevrolet Bolt EV at a construction site on Golden Gate Avenue was filmed by passers-by and uploaded to social media, prompting a lot of sarcasm and questions from netizens.

Many people questioned whether GM's Cruise self-driving taxi was really ready for full launch. Paul Harvey, who lives nearby, told the San Francisco portal that he saw the passenger-free car stuck at the construction site. He said the car might not be able to judge that it was about to drive into wet concrete, and he later saw someone pull the car out of the wet concrete.

Cruise said on social media X (formerly Twitter) that it had recycled the car. "one of our self-driving cars drove into a construction area and parked in wet concrete. The car has been recycled and we have communicated with the city government."

CTOnews.com noted that the accident involving Cruise self-driving cars came less than a week after the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) approved Cruise and Waymo to expand their self-driving car services in San Francisco. Previously, self-driving taxis were only allowed to drive on downtown streets late at night. The accident also occurred a few days after 10 Cruise self-driving cars blocked traffic for about 20 minutes because of a wireless Internet connection problem, which the San Francisco Police Department confirmed was caused by too many people at the Outside Lands music festival.
