Harvard University scientists recently cloned a supercomputer for heart disease research using Google Cloud Platform. This innovative approach can bypass the real problem of supercomputer computing resources shortage and speed up scientific research work, which is worth emulating by other researchers.

Petros Koumoutsakos, a professor at Harvard University, said the study simulates a therapy that dissolves blood clots and tumor cells in the human circulatory system and requires supercomputers to provide powerful computing power.

Koumoutsakos said: "The biggest problem we encountered was that we couldn't run simulation programs with full size supercomputers. He added that access to supercomputers is also needed to continue improving or optimizing the simulation process.

Only a handful of supercomputers in the United States can perform billions of calculations to accurately simulate the conditions Koumoutsakos requires.

Costas Bekas, director of research platforms at Citadel Securities, said the number of machines capable of doing the research was too small, creating bottlenecks for research.

To eliminate these bottlenecks, researchers and companies such as Castle Securities that require a lot of computing resources like supercomputers have begun turning to public cloud platforms.

But cloud computing operations aren't designed to meet researchers 'needs; they're designed for millions of relatively small independent computing tasks, such as streaming video, web services, or accessing databases, and are designed to be resilient and reliable.

Bill Magro, Google Cloud's chief high-performance computing technologist, said: "People are recognizing the potential of cloud computing to solve problems and science and technology engineering computing, to really unlock productivity and get better answers and insights faster. "

Magro said that in order for cloud infrastructure to function like a supercomputer, changes to the physical design of software, networks and hardware are needed.
