Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--

CTOnews.com, August 17 (Xinhua) earlier this year, the Pew Research Center reported that most American Twitter users have spent less time on the platform since Elon Musk took over last year. Now the new data show that another important user group is also exiting the platform now known as X.

Tuyuan Pexels according to a survey of thousands of scientists conducted by Nature magazine, since Elon Musk bought Twitter last year and changed its name to X, more than half of the scientists using Twitter have reduced the time they spend using the platform or quit altogether. Nearly half of the respondents said they had turned to other social networks, such as Mastodon.

CTOnews.com noted that more than 47 per cent of the 9200 researchers surveyed said they had reduced their use of the site, while nearly 7 per cent said they had withdrawn from the site altogether. It is worth noting that almost the same figures show that they opened an account on at least one new platform last year.

Among them, Mastodon has grown significantly since Musk announced its acquisition of Twitter, with about 47 per cent of researchers saying they started using the open source platform last year. LinkedIn and Instagram are the second most popular sites, attracting 35% and 27% of researchers, respectively. Interestingly, Meta's Twitter competitor Threads ranked fourth, although the app was launched only a few days before the Nature poll.

Twitter used to be an important platform for scientists to publicize research results and promote scientific discussion, and scientists on Twitter are also an authoritative source of information, which is very valuable for a platform that has been facing the problem of false information for a long time. Twitter is also a valuable source of data for researchers in fields ranging from public health to linguistics.

But all that has changed now. Many users feel overwhelmed by a platform that gives priority to paid authentication of user content, and the company's API, which is open to researchers, has become so expensive that most people cannot use it.

So while not all scientists interviewed by Nature are ready to abandon Twitter altogether, the company's strategy seems to have alienated most of the scientific community.
