A few days ago, a team of researchers at the University of California, Irvine, conducted a study on the reCAPTCHA project and found that the accuracy of AI in verifying reCAPTCHA systems is already higher than that of humans.

It is reported that 1400 volunteers were asked to participate in 14000 ▲ questions and evaluated the speed and accuracy of the answers. This type of CAPTCHA includes reCAPTCHA, game CAPTCHA, hCAPTCHA of matrix pictures to find out the theme (CTOnews.com Note: find the picture containing "bus" in the picture), slider-based CAPTCHA of guessing different angles, and CAPTCHA with distorted text, etc.

According to the test results, it took an average of 3.1 to 4.9 seconds for human subjects in a point-and-click reCAPTCHA, with an accuracy of 71 to 85 percent, while AI took an average of 1.4 seconds to complete, with an accuracy of 100 percent.

In the recognition of distorted text considering case, the human performance is 9-15.3 seconds, with an accuracy of 50-84%, which is significantly worse than that of AI (recognition speed is less than 1 second / accuracy 99.8%). In the hCAPTCHA of finding specific subject pictures in the picture matrix, the results of human subjects were 15-26 seconds, with an accuracy of 81% and 14.9 seconds, respectively, with an accuracy of 98%.

The researchers found that in almost all CAPTCHA tests, AI takes less time than humans, only in picture reCAPTCHA, humans and AI spend about the same time and accuracy, in which the human reaction time is 15-25 seconds, the AI reaction time is 17.5 seconds, and the human accuracy is 81%. The AI accuracy is 85%, but the researchers also point out that it takes longer for humans to solve problems in natural situations.

Project director researcher Gene Tsudik said that the CAPTCHA technology disgusted by human users has been broken through by AI, and it is difficult to have a practical role in the future, but in the face of this situation, a large number of enterprises still "do not want to admit that CAPTCHA is invalid", forcing users to continue to put up with these tedious reCAPTCHA verification systems.
