CTOnews.com August 16, Hefei Institute of material Sciences (HFIPS), led by Professor Zhao Bangchuan, recently developed a new type of water-soluble zinc ion battery with ultra-long cycle life in a weak magnetic field, which was recently published in the journal Materials Horizons.

After inquiry, CTOnews.com learned that zinc-ion water battery is a low-cost and safe substitute for lithium-ion battery with high theoretical capacity. However, the limited electrochemical performance of cathode materials and the growth of zinc dendrites on the anode reduce the energy density and cycle life of zinc ion water batteries, so in order to develop better waterborne zinc ion batteries, thorough basic research on "high energy density cathodes and inhibition of zinc dendrite growth" is needed.

▲ source "Materials Horizons" magazine reported that at present, the research team has overcome the limitations of existing cathode materials and the growth of zinc dendrites, and they have adopted one-step hydrothermal method and in-situ electrochemical defect engineering to produce VS2 materials, which can effectively reduce the electrostatic interaction between zinc ions and VS2, so the batteries developed with this material have excellent conductivity.

So far, the research team has developed a high-performance Zn-VS2 battery that works in a weak magnetic field, which has improved in terms of cycle life, energy density and power density compared with other previous research teams, and the team said that this work may have a significant impact on future energy storage technology.
