CTOnews.com reported on August 16 that the world emits at least 86 million tons of carbon dioxide every year due to the manufacture of glass. Researchers at Penn State University have developed a new type of glass called LionGlass, which has the potential to reduce carbon emissions by 50 per cent.

Compared with the traditional soda-calcium silicate glass, the production of LionGlass not only greatly reduces the production energy demand, but also has better durability.

The research team has now submitted a patent application and has begun to commercialize LionGlass.

"our goal is to make the glass manufacturing industry sustainable in the long term, so that LionGlass does not need to use carbonaceous batches and significantly reduces the melting temperature of glass," said John Mauro, lead researcher of the project.

With LionGlass, the melting temperature is reduced by about 300 to 400 degrees Celsius, and energy consumption is reduced by about 30 per cent compared with traditional soda lime glass.

LionGlass is not only more environmentally friendly, but also stronger than traditional glass. The crack resistance of LionGlass is at least 10 times that of standard soda lime glass, and the glass will not crack under the load of 1 kilo acrylic of Vickers diamond indenter, while the traditional standard soda lime glass will crack under the load of 0.1kg.
