Thanks to CTOnews.com netizens imisaka, ultraman21, Sprite2017, FinnHiram for the clue delivery! CTOnews.com August 15, Intel launched the first generation of Arc A770 and A750 in October 2022, but it will take some time for software support to keep up.

Pugetsystems found that the latest Adobe Premiere Pro 2024 Beta Build 22 beta officially supports Intel Arc GPU hardware encoding and decoding, including full support for H.264 and HEVC.

Although CTOnews.com does not recommend using the Beta version for daily use, this is especially important for those who do not like Nvidia and AMD graphics cards, especially Intel Arc graphics cards with stronger codec support than NVIDIA and AMD.

The GPU hardware codec mentioned here is different from CPU accelerated codec. Adobe officially divides this series of work into hardware accelerated decoding, Mercury Playbck Engine (GPU accelerated) and hardware accelerated coding. The differences between them are as follows:

Mercury Playbck Engine (GPU acceleration) is a renderer used to handle GPU acceleration and enhance playback.

When exporting timelines in H.264 / AVC and HEVC codecs, hardware accelerated coding can speed up decoding performance.

Hardware accelerated decoding is a process used to accelerate the decoding of H.264 / AVC and HEVC media when the timeline is played.

For now, Intel has an advantage in using hardware decoding support for HEVC 4:2:2 10bit media, as well as specific versions of HEVC.

Although HEVC 4:2:2 10bit is not as common as HEVC 4:2:0 8 bit, most vendors are gradually supporting HEVC 4:2:2 10bit related media, so the share of HEVC 4:2:2 10bit in practical use has gradually increased.

It is worth mentioning that Pugetsystems also tested and compared NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 16GB with Arc A770 16GB graphics card, and also tested its performance with corresponding CPU and kernel display on Intel and AMD platforms. The results are as follows:

As a result, when there is a kernel display (whether AMD or Intel) on the test platform, the performance of Premiere Pro Beta is basically the same as that of the current official version 23.6. After the research, Pugetsystems found two problems:

For AMD Ryzen 7700X (iGPU), there is no performance improvement in Premiere Pro Beta beta, because in both versions, Premiere Pro is encoded using iGPU by default rather than being unique. In a nutshell, the priority order of Adobe is NVIDIA-> AMD-> Intel, and currently users cannot specify a particular GPU. For this reason, the iGPU priority on the Ryzen 7700X is higher than that of Intel alone, which means that the test platform is coding using AMD iGPU in both Premiere Pro 23.6 and 24.0 beta.

For Intel Core i7 13700K (iGPU), if you are using a 12-generation or newer CPU,Premiere Pro, it will also default to iGPU for hardware coding instead of unique display. To put it simply, on the Intel platform, the Arc A770 is still used only for rendering and processing GPU effects, but the hardware coding is handled by iGPU.

In the case of shielded nuclear display, the performance of the test platform is directly improved by 50% to 200%, depending on the corresponding acceleration ability of CPU, while CPU with sufficient performance (such as Threadripper PRO) gains the least.

It is said that if users use Intel Core CPU with fast synchronization, Premiere Pro will use fast synchronization for hardware decoding by default, and when Intel fast synchronization is not available, Premiere Pro 24.0 Beta can make full use of Intel Arc A770 for hardware decoding. The revenue also depends on the specific CPU used, with an increase ranging from a few percentage points to 40%. However, there are obvious advantages in the more difficult areas of HEVC, such as HEVC 4:2:2 10 bit and 8Kk or even higher resolution.

So, what is the difference in performance between Intel Arc and NVIDIA GeForce Premiere Pro? Pugetsystems uses Intel Arc A770 to compare with Nvidia GeForce RTX 4060 8GB, and the results show that Intel Arc does have a natural advantage in supporting HEVC 4:2:2 10bit (because neither AMD nor NVIDIA currently supports it).

As a result, Intel Arc has a clear advantage in encoding and decoding H.264 and HEVC media (Nvidia has a weak advantage in RAW), while the Arc A770 16GB performance is 50% to 70% faster than RTX 4060, but both currently have the lowest price of 2399 yuan in JD.com Mall.
