CTOnews.com, August 15, a total of two or four wafer plants are planned for the second phase of the TSMC Zhongke Taichung Park expansion project, which was originally scheduled to start this year, but at present, the China Science and Technology Administration has postponed the expansion and development plan three times, and it is still uncertain when it will pass the review.

According to the Economic Daily of Taiwan, the China Science and Technology Administration today informed the Taichung municipal government that the second phase of the expansion of the Taichung Taichung Park, which is related to the construction of the TSMC 2nm plant, has been put on the agenda of urban planning review to be held on the 25th of this month.

Xu Maoxin, director of central science management at Tuyuan Pexels, said that the extension case was delayed for a year and a half, and it was too late for the original operation plan, and after the government passed the examination, it had to be sent to the Metropolitan Committee of the Ministry of the Interior for review. It was expected that the land could not be started until the end of the year, and it was determined that it would be too late to hand over the land by the end of this year.

The report also pointed out that TSMC was forced to make a decision to plan the construction of the 2nm production line at the Kaohsiung plant as a result of the second phase of the expansion of the Taichung Park.

The reason why TSMC decided to cut the Kaohsiung factory directly into the 2nm is that the recent AI business opportunities are faster and stronger than expected. Chip manufacturers such as Apple and Nvidia all pay attention to the TSMC 2nm process, while Huang Renxun said earlier that the new generation of server chips will fully adopt the TSMC 2nm process in the future.

As far as CTOnews.com knows, at present, TSMC's main production planning for 2nm will first be placed in Hsinchu Baoshan. TSMC's internal Fab 20 plant is planned to build four plants from P1 to P4, while P1 is currently racing to catch up with the progress, and it is expected to achieve risky trial production next year and mass production in the second half of 2025.

According to TSMC supply chain sources, TSMC has informed equipment manufacturers to start delivering 2nm-related machines in the third quarter of next year, and the 2nm installation operation of the Kaohsiung plant is estimated to be only one month behind the Hsinchu Baoshan plant.

According to the information currently known, TSMC plans to build two 12-inch wafer plants at the former site of the Kaohsiung refinery, including the first phase of 7nm and 6nm wafer plants with a monthly capacity of 40,000 wafers, and the second phase of 28nm and 22nm wafer plants with a monthly capacity of 20,000 wafers. If the investment plan confirms that the first phase of the fab will be completed in 2024 and will not enter mass production until 2025, but now it seems that it has chosen to cut into the 2nm project for a variety of reasons, and the specific planning is still uncertain.
