CTOnews.com Google says it has made a major breakthrough in artificial intelligence that could significantly reduce the impact of flight on the climate.

Long white lines left in the sky by aircraft are called wake clouds. They are formed when smoke emitted by aircraft condenses into ice crystals in the cold sky. Wake clouds sometimes darken the sky and block heat from the earth, contributing to global warming. The United Nations estimates that wake clouds from aircraft account for more than a third of the global warming impact of flying.

If aircraft could avoid areas prone to wake clouds, their contribution to global warming could be reduced. To achieve this goal, Google researchers used artificial intelligence technology to collect satellite images, weather and flight path data and feed it into an artificial intelligence system that can provide pilots with routes to avoid creating wake clouds.

Google partnered with an airline and a data provider to conduct 70 test flights over six months, allowing American Airlines pilots to follow routes generated by AI systems. The researchers then examined satellite images and found that wake clouds were reduced by 54 percent.

"This is the first evidence that commercial flights can reduce wake clouds, thereby reducing their impact on climate. Google said in its announcement. CTOnews.com notes that Google also points out that these flights consume 2% more fuel, but Google believes that these routes can be used selectively. Google said it would "work with the entire aviation industry over the next few years to use artificial intelligence to make eliminating wake clouds a reality" and said it had "the potential to be a cost-effective, scalable solution to reduce the impact of flight on climate."
