Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com, August 13 (Xinhua)-- on February 27, 2021, a 2019 Tesla Model X in Autopilot autopilot mode crashed into a police car at 54mph. Five policemen who were conducting routine traffic checks were injured in the accident, as were the drivers who were stopped by the police.
The driver of the Model X was reported to be drunk at the time of the accident. In spite of this, the injured five police officers filed a lawsuit against Tesla. The lawsuit alleges that Tesla failed to fully resolve the problem with his Autopilot driving assistance system and sought compensation of between $1 million and $20 million for injury and permanent disability.
The video of the 2019 Model X was successfully obtained by a Wall Street Journal investigation, and it turns out that the driver received 150 warnings from Autopilot before the crash. The warnings advised the driver to take over the vehicle and lasted 34 minutes.
The 2019 Model X does not have an in-car camera, so the car's Autopilot driving monitoring system relies heavily on the ability to detect torque on the steering wheel. Considering that the driver has received 150 warnings, it can be seen that the driver can exert enough torque to keep the Autopilot active.
It is reported that after receiving the 150th warning from the vehicle, the drunk Model X driver finally followed Autopilot's advice to take over the vehicle. At the moment, however, the Model X is only 2.5 seconds and 33.8m away from the parked police car. According to the Wall Street Journal, Autopilot tried to stop the Model X, but the system appears to have been deactivated and the driver is expected to take over control.
Tesla has always insisted that the responsibility lies with the allegedly drunken Model X driver, and to some extent, Tesla has a point, because without an Autopilot vehicle, if the driver does not pay attention to the road, he may immediately have an accident and cause more injuries. That said, if Autopilot issued 150 warnings, it was clear that the driver was not focused on the road, and Tesla Autopilot should have been programmed to park the car by the side of the road to make it safer.
