Thanks to CTOnews.com netizens Wu Yanzu in South China for the delivery of clues! CTOnews.com, August 12 (Xinhua)-- Canadian satellite communications company Telesat has announced a contract with space technology company MDA that the Lightspeed constellation will be fully funded to build 198 satellites. The Telesat Lightspeed satellite is scheduled to begin in mid-2026, and polar and global services are planned to begin at the end of 2027.

CTOnews.com learned from the official website that the redesigned Telesat Lightspeed satellite network will achieve higher network efficiency and greater flexibility, and the new technology will make each satellite smaller than previously planned, while maintaining the highest level of service performance, flexibility and overall available capacity.

It is worth mentioning that compared with previous Telesat capital estimates, the 198 satellite program is expected to save about $2 billion in total capital costs. The constellation was originally planned to include nearly 300 satellites, but Telesat reduced its size by 100 after facing funding problems.

Telesat has currently received total funding commitments from Canadian federal and provincial government partners, totaling approximately US $2 billion. The funding, together with Telesat's own equity contribution of about $1.6 billion and financing from some suppliers, will provide sufficient funding for the Telesat Lightspeed project to launch global services, which will be launched after the first 156satellites are in orbit.
