CTOnews.com, August 12 (Xinhua) A recent study conducted by the University of California, San Diego shows that transplantation of hematopoietic stem cells in mice with Alzheimer's disease can reduce symptoms such as memory loss, neuroinflammation and the accumulation of β-amyloid protein.

Stem cell transplantation has been successfully used to treat a range of cancer, blood and immune system diseases, and initial research results by scientists suggest that this approach may be a new way to treat Alzheimer's disease.

In the study, published in Cell Reports, the team transplanted hematopoietic stem cells and progenitor cells into experimental mice that already had Alzheimer's disease, effectively curbing a variety of signs and symptoms of Alzheimer's disease.

The success of this treatment is due to its effect on microglia, an immune cell in the brain. Microglia are involved in the occurrence and development of Alzheimer's disease in various ways.

Persistent microglial inflammation can lead to Alzheimer's disease because the release of inflammatory cytokines, chemokines and complement proteins leads to increased production of beta-amyloid.

Microglia also play an important role in clearing beta-amyloid plaques in healthy conditions, but this function is impaired in Alzheimer's disease.

The resulting accumulation of beta-amyloid also puts pressure on other brain cells, including endothelial cells that affect blood flow in the brain.
