Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com news on August 11, after Red Hat (Red Hat) announced that it would no longer release Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) source code to the public, Oracle, SUSE and CIQ, which all belong to the Linux field, issued a general draft yesterday, announcing that the Open Enterprise Linux Association (OpenELA) Association would be established to provide "open and free" Enterprise Linux (EL) source code to encourage third parties to develop Linux versions compatible with RHEL.
▲ Tupu SUSECTOnews.com reported earlier that Red Hat decided not to provide RHEL source code publicly in June this year, but only to open the CentOS Stream source code that belongs to RHEL beta version. Red Hat had previously said that the future RHEL source code would be directly supplied to Red Hat commercial customers and partners through Red Hat Customer Portal.
Red Hat's move sparked widespread outrage in the industry, which questioned that Red Hat's actions violated various open source licenses, including GPL. However, Mike McGrath, vice president of Red Hat core platform engineering, once explained that "Red Hat spent a lot of time and energy developing and maintaining RHEL, and would also submit relevant results to projects such as Fedora, CentOS Stream, or Linux Kernel, so Red Hat complied with its own open source license."
However, there is clearly a different view in the industry after SUSE announced that it would invest more than $10 million to develop a RHEL-compatible Linux distribution. At present, Oracle, SUSE and CIQ have announced the establishment of the Open Enterprise Linux Association, and the main function of OpenELA is to develop distributions compatible with RHEL Enterprise Edition.
▲ source SUSEOpenELA said on its website, "the DNA,OpenELA project of open source and community is OpenELA will be in the best interests of the open source community and all downstream derivative versions as a starting point, so as to encourage wider community participation, and all contributors are welcome to join the OpenELA project."
OpenELA plans to provide a range of suites to developers in the second half of this year to participate with the community in the development of RHEL-compatible distributions. The initial project will be based on RHEL 8 and RHEL 9. However, it is not known whether the source code provided by OpenELA will be exactly the same as RHEL.
