CTOnews.com August 11, Microsoft Edge team today issued a press release announcing that the cooperation with the Microsoft Office team has greatly improved the performance of web-based applications such as Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook and Teams.

Microsoft said that in the process of building the above Office web version, it needs to deploy more than 5000 CSS rules, create more than 2000 nodes in the DOM tree, and send dozens of HTTP requests when the page loads.

A survey by the Office team this year found that the web version of PowerPoint invokes multiple out-of-process iframe in terms of enabling, thus showing significant CPU usage in the Edge DevTools performance tool.

The Office team says that in extreme cases, the web version of PowerPoint can be full of CPU on 10-core CPU devices.

The Office team uses Windows event tracking (ETW) to confirm that this is due to CPU parser sampling in Chromium, the browser engine built by Edge.

Through a more accurate sleep timing approach, the Office team reduced CPU sampling overhead by 95% and the total CPU footprint of Edge browsers by 71%.
