CTOnews.com, August 10 (Xinhua)-- Dr. Jason Dunlop recently published a study in the Journal of Palaeontology (The Paleontological Journal), saying that it was discovered 310 million years ago and is the oldest spider ever found by humans.

The fossil spider was named "arthrolycosa wolterbeeki" after discoverer Tim Wolterbeek, who found it at the Pillsberg quarry near Lower Saxony in Germany and donated it to the Natural History Museum in Berlin.

Dr. Dunlop of the museum delved into the fossil, and the CTOnews.com excerpt report is as follows: the spider is about one centimeter long and four centimeters wide.

All the features of the spider are well preserved, and you can see the hair and claws on the legs. The doctor believes that this is the first Palaeozoic spider from Germany, aged between 310 million and 315 million years old.

Spiders are a common species in nature. at present, more than 51000 species of spiders have been found, and more than 1000 species live in Germany. Although spiders are now widely distributed and abundant, this species was not very common more than 300 million years ago.
