Korean Society: there are no results to confirm the superconductivity of "LK-99"

CTOnews.com, August 10 (Xinhua) recently, a material called "LK-99", developed by the Korea Quantum Energy Research Center, has caused a sensation in the global scientific community, claiming that superconductivity, zero resistance and complete diamagnetism can be achieved at room temperature at atmospheric pressure. If this material is verified, it will be the first time in human history to achieve room temperature superconductivity, which is of great significance for electric power, transportation, medical and other fields.

The Korea Superconductor and Cryogenic Society set up a special "LK-99" evaluation committee on August 2 to review and verify two papers and public videos published by the Quantum Energy Research Center.

According to the China Science Daily, the committee said that based on current data and videos, it was unable to confirm that "LK-99" was a room temperature superconductor and observed some phenomena that did not conform to superconducting properties.

In order to confirm or deny the superconductivity of "LK-99", the committee is using two ways to verify it. One is to copy "LK-99" samples and measure their superconducting properties at room temperature and atmospheric pressure according to the method proposed in this paper. At present, three laboratories are doing this work. The second is to take samples from the Quantum Energy Research Center and cross-measure them, and the committee has made a request for samples to the Quantum Energy Research Center.

CTOnews.com noted that the committee also evaluated the resurgence work of the relevant teams in China. They believe that neither the work of Huazhong University of Science and Technology nor Southeast University has proved the room temperature superconductivity of "LK-99". Although the video and paper released by the research team of Huazhong University of Science and Technology claimed to have successfully copied "LK-99", the magnetic levitation in the video was unstable and there was no magnetic levitation caused by flux capture, and the researchers admitted that they had not yet proved that the resistance was zero. Southeast University synthesized the "LK-99" sample and reported a near-zero resistivity at minus 127C. However, they also said that no diamagnetism was observed in these samples, so the results could not be seen as evidence of room temperature superconductivity.

The committee said that as of the morning of August 4, 2023, no results had confirmed the "LK-99" superconductivity. They also pointed out that there is no theory to explain the occurrence of superconductivity at room temperature and atmospheric pressure, so the simulation results alone are not enough to confirm the superconductivity of "LK-99".
