Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
Thanks to CTOnews.com netizens soft media users 1520111, soft media new friends 1933769 clues delivery! CTOnews.com, August 9 (Xinhua)-- Google recently announced the introduction of new cellular network security features in its upcoming Android 14 operating system to better protect users' business data and communications.
Android 14 not only allows users and businesses to turn off support for 2G networks on devices or managed devices, but also disables support for empty password (unencrypted) cellular connections at the modem level.
CTOnews.com translates Google's statement as follows:
Android 14 is the first mobile operating system to introduce advanced cellular security mitigation measures for consumers and businesses.
Android 14 introduces support for IT administrators to disable 2G networks in managed device clusters and to disable support for empty encrypted cellular connections.
Google highlighted the risk of virtual base stations and Stingrays attacks, which allow attackers to hijack users' data, voice and text messages by eavesdropping on network traffic.
CTOnews.com Note: Stingrays, also known as IMSI catcher, is a base station simulator device that forces mobile phones within its range to connect to it. After connecting, Stingrays can perform man-in-the-middle attacks to intercept sensitive personal information, such as:
Device IMSI information
Call metadata, such as dialed number, call duration, etc.
Text messages and voice calls
Data usage and web browsing history.
Shutting down 2G Google is the first Android 12 operating system to offer the option to disable 2G, which users can do by "setting up → networks and the Internet → SIM → to allow 2G".
Google said that from Android 14, managers of government agencies, business entities or other organizations can manage device clusters and disable 2G network connections.
Google said the option to disable 2G networks would be added to Android Enterprise, which currently supports the management of more than 200 controls such as disabled WiFi, Bluetooth and USB data signaling.
Disable support for empty passwords (unencrypted) cellular connections Google also said that empty passwords (unencrypted) are not uncommon in commercial networks, where data is exposed in clear text and easy-to-read form.
Android 14 reduces risk by allowing devices using the latest radio hardware abstraction layer (HAL) to turn off support for zero-password connections at the modem level.
Like the 2G disable feature, emergency calls can still be downgraded to a zero password connection to avoid compromising the user's security.
