The new Omniverse Cloud API helps developers to use OpenUSD;-generated AI model ChatUSD LLM to use USD for dialogue; RunUSD converts USD into interactive graphics, and DeepSearch LLM implements semantic 3D search

Los ANGELES-SIGGRAPH-Pacific time August 8, 2023-NVIDIA today announced that it will provide developers and enterprises with a range of frameworks, resources, and services to accelerate the adoption of common scenario descriptions, or OpenUSD.

NVIDIA is advancing OpenUSD through a combination of NVIDIA Omniverse ™and new technologies, cloud application programming interfaces (API) such as ChatUSD and RunUSD, and a new NVIDIA OpenUSD developer program. OpenUSD is a 3D framework that can realize the interworking between software tools and data types, thus building a virtual world.

NVIDIA last week announced the formation of the OpenUSD Alliance (AOUSD) with Pixar, Adobe, Apple and Autodesk to unify the OpenUSD specification. These investments in OpenUSD will contribute to the alliance.

OpenUSD uploaded to the cloud

NVIDIA has released four new self-built Omniverse Cloud API to help developers implement and deploy OpenUSD processes and applications more seamlessly.

● ChatUSD: a large language model (LLM) copilot tool for developers that can answer USD knowledge questions or generate Python-USD code scripts. ChatUSD makes fine-tuning with the USD features and Python-USD code snippets provided by NVIDIA.

● RunUSD: a Cloud API that converts an OpenUSD file to a full path trace rendered image by checking the compatibility of the uploaded file with the OpenUSD version, and generates the rendering using Omniverse Cloud. Currently, developers in the NVIDIA OpenUSD developer program can use the demo of the API.

● DeepSearch: it is a LLM agent that enables fast semantic search in a massive database of unmarked assets.

● USD-GDN Publisher: it is an one-button service that enables enterprises and software manufacturers to publish OpenUSD-based high-fidelity experiences from Omniverse-based applications such as USD Composer to Omniverse Cloud GDN and transmit them to web browsers and mobile devices in real time.

Evolving OpenUSD function

OpenUSD aims to better connect movie and animation processes. At the same time, industrial applications (such as building interoperable manufacturing design processes, creating real-time factory digital twins that conform to physics, or training and verifying self-driving cars, etc.) also put forward different requirements for 3D frameworks.

To support these highly complex industrial and aware AI workloads, NVIDIA is developing NVIDIA Omniverse (the OpenUSD native software platform for developing applications), as well as geospatial data models, measurement components, SimReady, OpenUSD specifications, and so on.

The OpenUSD geospatial data model allows users to simulate and calculate realistic digital twins of factories, warehouses, cities and even the earth. For very large-scale projects, it also takes into account the curvature of the earth to ensure that the simulation conforms to physics.

Industrial applications need to merge datasets from many tools and sources, each represented in different units. NVIDIA is developing an OpenUSD metrics component that enables users to merge datasets in different formats 100% accurately.

NVIDIA is also developing a structure for the new SimReady 3D model. These models will contain real materials and physical properties, which are essential for precise training of autonomous robots and vehicles. Autonomous robots responsible for sorting packages, for example, need to perform simulated training on 3D packages, which move as if they were in the real world and respond to physical contact.
