He believes that working with front-line IC designers like Qualcomm will not be conducive to the growth of RibbonFET and PowerVia, further making Intel 18A R & D and mass production face higher uncertainty and risk.

Guo Mingyi pointed out that after the advanced manufacturing process has entered 7nm, high-end orders from front-line IC designers are even more important for wafer foundry.

It is said that the design capability, order specifications (especially the top end) and order size of front-line IC designers can significantly improve the technical strength of contract manufacturers compared with general orders, which is also the key to TSMC's leading edge over other competitors so far, and the biggest negative impact on Intel caused by Qualcomm's suspension of Intel 20A development.

He said that after 7nm, the development costs of IC designers have increased significantly, making it difficult to work with different contract manufacturers on the same node.

Take Qualcomm 3nm chip development as an example, because the company has established cooperation with TSMC and Samsung, coupled with layoffs and the smartphone market is still declining, it does not have enough resources to develop chips for Intel 20A, which is roughly equivalent to TSMC 3nm.

Referring to a large number of previous reports from CTOnews.com, Intel's process technology planning has gradually moved from Intel 10 to Intel 7 and Intel 4 in recent years, and then to Intel 3, Intel 20A and Intel 18A.

According to Intel, Intel 7 has been mass produced, Intel 4 will be launched in the second half of this year and will be used in core processors (Meter Lake). Intel 3 is moving forward as planned, and the test chips of Intel 20A and Intel 18A have been out of production.

Although Intel announced that its CPU module would use the Intel 20A process when it announced the Arrow Lake last year, there has been continuous news that it will switch to TSMC's N3 process, and it is now reported that Intel has abandoned the 20A process in Arrow Lake, and all its cores will be produced by TSMC.
