Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com August 8 news, TSMC is the world's largest chipmaker, supplying chips to Apple, Qualcomm and other technology giants. In recent years, due to increased demand for chips and supply shortages, TSMC plans to build new plants in the United States and Germany to expand capacity and meet customer demand. However, these plans have also caused some controversy and doubt.
TSMC's plant in Arizona is its first plant in the United States, which is supported and subsidized by the US government. The purpose of the factory is to improve U. S. autonomy and competitiveness in the chip field, as well as to create jobs. However, the construction of the factory has encountered some difficulties and challenges. It is reported that there are some safety problems in the project of the factory, such as delay in construction period and cost overruns. The plant originally scheduled to start production in 2024 has been postponed to 2025, and there are rumors that chips made in the United States will be more expensive than those made in Taiwan.
In order to speed up construction and reduce costs, TSMC plans to send about 500 experienced construction workers from Taiwan to work in the United States. TSMC said the workers had experience in building similar factories in Taiwan, which could help improve efficiency and quality. However, the move was opposed by local trade unions. The unions see this as a violation of their commitment to create jobs for American workers and show disrespect for the skills and standards of American workers. The union launched a petition asking senators and members of the House of Representatives to stop TSMC from applying for an EB-2 visa, and set up a website called "stand with American Workers", accusing TSMC of reneging on its words, insulting American workers and trying to exploit cheap labour.
CTOnews.com noted that according to the Financial Times, TSMC also plans to build a new factory in the German state of Saxony, which is also based on subsidies and support from the German government. Similarly, the factory may need to recruit more workers from overseas, as Germany also faces a skills shortage and a declining population.
