CTOnews.com August 8, Sony's Evo 2023 e-sports competition was held in Las Vegas last weekend, attracting a large number of combat game enthusiasts to participate. However, some contestants encountered unexpected trouble: when their USB accessories were plugged into the PlayStation 5 (PS5) mainframe provided by the conference, the latter's USB plug "melted" due to overheating.

Evo 2023 is a combat game acquired by Sony in 2021, and contestants can use USB accessories such as their own handles or joysticks to operate the characters. However, some people find that when their USB plugs are unplugged from the PS5 mainframe, they take away some of the melted blue USB connectors of the mainframe, causing the accessories to be damaged or unusable.

Eduardo Cuervo, a current Google (and former Meta and Microsoft) augmented reality engineer, posted a photo on X (formerly Twitter) showing blue fragments of the PS5 host glued to the USB plug on his handle. "mine is not the only melting handle," he wrote. "it's terrible. You need to do something about this lack of heat dissipation, especially if you're going to use PS5 in the game."

Other contestants expressed similar grievances on social media. Reddit user u / SyrupyCereal posted: "after I played Street Fighter 6, my opponent politely unplugged my data cable. As a result, PS5's USB receiver came out and broke my Junkfood cable on the spot. When I was about to play the first game of 'Blue Fantasy Versus: rise', I realized I couldn't plug the cable into the PS5."

It is not clear what caused the overheating. This is not the first time an e-sports competition has been hosted on a PS5 host, and there have been no similar complaints about the melting of the USB interface. Some participants speculated that someone might have plugged in an unsupported USB converter so that they could use an incompatible handle, which may have damaged the host interface.

Evo 2023 General Assembly and Sony have not yet responded to the matter, and CTOnews.com will keep an eye on it.
