CTOnews.com, August 8 (Xinhua)-- Microsoft plans to release a new feature update for Windows 11 later this year, version number 23H2. In addition to some new features, such as dynamic lighting, native RAR support, ink improvements, etc., this update will also introduce a newly designed file explorer that provides gallery features, improved tag management, modern UI elements, enhanced OneDrive integration, and more. This update has been tested on the Beta channel, meaning the release date is not far away.

However, the new file explorer has a big problem: performance. To put it mildly, Windows 11's upcoming file explorer is not fast. Even if you run updates on supported hardware, users may experience serious performance degradation.

Gustave Monce shows the problem of using the new file explorer on Twitter, and the video shows that it opens slowly. It is worth mentioning that the original Surface Duo, a device not designed to run a desktop operating system, is better at opening new file explorer, though not very fast, but faster than Surface Go 2.

One might think that the Surface Go 2 configuration is too low, but the problem is that the new file explorer is also slow to run on more powerful hardware. CTOnews.com noted that Windows Insider MVP Florian (@ flobo09 on Twitter) said it took up to 21 seconds for their desktop computers with Intel Core i5-7600K and 16GB memory to start File Explorer. Another user said that on systems equipped with Ryzen 3400G and 16GB memory, the new file resource manager was "almost unusable" and the feedback center was filled with similar complaints.

Upgrading File Explorer to WinAppSDK may enable Microsoft to implement new features and improve consistency, but it obviously also seriously harms performance, and you can only hope that Microsoft will be able to optimize it in the remaining months before the release of Windows 11 23H2, otherwise many users will have to stick with the version 22H2 or even stay on Windows 10.
