At present, there are four research schemes.

It is reported that the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong spindle is located in the knowledge-intensive industrial corridor with the most developed economy and the highest unit population concentration in the Dawan area, with a passenger flow density of 109.63 million in 2017, which has tended to be saturated. In 2035, the passenger flow density of the Guangzhou-Shenzhen-Hong Kong spindle will reach 260 million, with a capacity gap of about 40 million. Therefore, it is necessary to add a new high-speed project to meet the traffic needs of Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Hong Kong. in addition, the passenger flow links between the main urban centers of the eight cities also need high-speed channels to solve the problem of uneven development.

According to Chen Xiangsheng, there are several line schemes for maglev in Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Hong Kong, with a design speed of 650 kilometers per hour. at present, there are four options: the first is the eastern route via Xiangmi Lake, that is, Guangzhou East Railway Station-Dongguan City-Shenzhen Xiangmi Lake; the second is the eastern route via Qianhai, that is, Guangzhou East Station-Dongguan Humen-Shenzhen Qianhai. The third plan is the western route via the Pearl River New Town, namely the Pearl River New Town-Guangzhou Nansha-Shenzhen Qianhai; the fourth is the western route via Guangzhou Station, namely Guangzhou Station-Guangzhou Nansha-Shenzhen Qianhai.

Chen Xiangsheng said that at present, the first option is the preferred one, but it is not known whether it will be implemented or not. He also said, "apart from Guangzhou and Shenzhen, Shanghai, Hangzhou, Chengdu and Chongqing, and other places are planning to build maglev lines to see who can take the lead."
