Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com, Aug. 7 (Xinhua)-- according to NPR, some extras on the Marvel Disney + show Wanda Vision said they were taken to a trailer for facial and body scans for about 15 minutes, but were never told how the digital copies of the scans would be used or whether they would be paid for it.
Wanda Vision is a superhero mini-series produced by Marvel Studios about the lives of two Avengers characters-Wanda Maximov and Phantom-in a fictional TV world. The show was launched at Disney + on January 15, 2021 and was widely praised by audiences and critics.
Alexandra Rubarkaba, an extra for Wanda Vision, told NPR that she and dozens of other extras were instructed to have a body scan in a trailer on the set. "they said, 'you're going to do a scan over there,'" she said. We asked, 'what's this for?' and they said,'Oh, this is for special effects that may be used in the future.'"
Body scanning is a process of three-dimensional imaging of the human body using high-tech equipment, which can be used to make digital character models. This technique is often used in movies and TV dramas to create realistic special effects scenes, such as "reviving" deceased actors or making the same actor appear in multiple avatars.
Rubarkaba said she was never told how her digital copies would be used or whether she would be paid for it. "I don't know where they will put my face, I don't know where they will put my body, I don't know where they will put my voice," she said. "
NPR also interviewed four other extras who also said they had been forced or induced by the studio to have a body scan and feared that they would be punished if they refused or resisted, and most of them were required to sign confidentiality agreements.
CTOnews.com noted that the Hollywood Actors Guild (SAG-AFTRA) is currently in strike negotiations with studios, one of the main focus is the possibility of using artificial intelligence (AI) technology to replace actors. The strikers said the studio had put forward a proposal to obtain the digital image of extras at the cost of a day's salary and to use them permanently in any project.
"with the rise of artificial intelligence technology, actors are facing an existential threat," Duncan Crabtree-Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, SAG-AFTRA 's national executive director and chief negotiator, said at a news conference.
A representative of the Federation of Film and Television producers (AMPTP) denied the claim, saying their proposal to use digital copies of extras included seeking the consent of actors and negotiating for use in individual projects.
