Chromebook is characterized by low price, fast startup and high security, but it also has a disadvantage that they have a fixed automatic update expiration (AUE) date. This means that after this date, Chromebook will no longer receive security updates or new features from Google.

Recently, the US Public interest Research Group (US PIRG) found that 13 Chromebook models reached the AUE date this summer but were still sold at the original price on websites such as Amazon, which did not make it clear to consumers that the devices would no longer be supported by Google.

US PIRG pointed out that this approach is "absurd" because it poses safety risks to consumers, generates e-waste and leads to waste of money. The group also criticized Google for refusing to extend the life of Chromebook, especially during the outbreak, when many students and teachers needed to use these devices for online learning.

US PIRG recommends that retailers clearly mark their AUE dates when selling Chromebook and remind consumers to check this information before buying. In addition, the group called on Google to provide longer support time for Chromebook that has expired or is about to expire.

CTOnews.com noted that there are still 51 Chromebook models approaching the AUE date next summer. "parents and teachers don't expect a 'death date' when buying laptops for the start of school, and sellers don't mention lack of support in ads," US PIRG said. "A new laptop, with all the functions students need to do basic homework, has lost its support. students and the planet deserve better."
