CTOnews.com August 4, Apple industry analyst Guo Mingyi said that the iPhone 16 series will use stackable rear camera sensor design throughout the product line.

This year's iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus models will have a 4800-megapixel rear camera and a stackable CMOS image sensor (CIS) design to capture more light.

Production problems with the new sensor design may prevent Apple from using all iPhone 15 models this year, and although Sony's high-end CIS capacity is expected to be tight by 2024, Apple has secured most of Sony's orders. Mr Guo expects shipments of high-end CIS (48MP+) to grow by 50 per cent in half a year to 3600 million in the second half of this year. Among them, the shipments in the third quarter and fourth quarter were 1600 million and 2000 million respectively.

CTOnews.com learned from Guo Mingyi's revelations that Sony's capacity crunch will benefit its rival supplier Will Semi (Weir) to secure more high-end CIS orders from Chinese smartphone brands. In Weir's high-end CIS, the main contributions come from OV50A, OV50E, OV50H and OV64B, replacing many Sony orders.
