Thanks to the CTOnews.com netizen Mr. Air, OC_Formula for the clue delivery! CTOnews.com, Aug. 4, according to Bloomberg, Japanese House of Representatives member Amari Akira said that the Japanese government will provide TSMC Kumamoto's second fab with most of the cost, at least 1/3.

Amari Akira and Guan Fanghong, chairman and secretary-general of the LDP semiconductor group, said the government had promised to cover half of the cost of the first Kumamoto factory.

"this is a national strategy," Mr Amari Akira said on Wednesday. "the choices we face will determine our direction in the coming decades. Are we going to be suppliers or purchasers of chips? which is better? regardless of the outcome, we have no choice but to accept the challenge."

Tuyuan Pexels said whether the government would also pay half the cost of TSMC's second plant would depend on what type of chips the plant would produce and how much broader economic impact the plant could have on the region. For example, if TSMC plans to train many Japanese engineers through its own more skilled workers, the government will give more support, he added.

He also said they would like to see at least Y1,000bn of chip-related support in this year's additional budget, which could be confirmed by the end of the year. "trillions of yen investment in chips is the global standard," Amari Akira said. "We will provide a lot of budget."

Liu Deyin, chairman of TSMC, said in June that the company was in discussions with Japan about subsidies for a second plant, which could be next to its Kumamoto plant.

In fact, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida made this intention clear last year. If the additional budget is supported, Japan will start a plan to invest about 10 trillion yen in semiconductors over the next decade.

According to Japan's Ministry of economy, Trade and Industry, so far, about 1.76 trillion yen has been reserved for the national chip and digital strategy developed in 2021 and revised this year, of which 1.2 trillion yen is for semiconductors, 500 billion yen for batteries and 60 billion yen for software-related projects. Japan aims to triple sales of domestic semiconductors to more than 15 trillion yen by 2030.
