CTOnews.com, August 4, although the storage business is gradually shifting from mechanical hard drive (HDD) to solid-state hard drive (SSD), HDD is still the best solution in many application scenarios.

Backblaze recently counted 245757 mechanical and solid state drives used in its global data centers, of which 4460 are boot disks, of which 3144 are SSD,1316 blocks and HDD.

Backblaze said it had monitored 241297 hard drives in its data center by the end of the second quarter of 2023.

After excluding the 357 hard drives used for testing and some single-digit models, a total of 240940 hard drives were counted in the table and divided into 31 model groups to provide annual failure rate (AFR) data.

Six drive models performed perfectly in the second quarter of 2023, but three of them were too few to be statistically significant.

The oldest working storage drive in the Backblaze lineup is 4 TB Seagate ST 4000 DM 000. it lasted 105.2 months without failure, but the oldest working hard drive winner was 500 GB lifetime WDC WD 5000 BPKT boot hard drive 122 months (10.2 years).

AFR rose from 1. 54% in the first quarter to 2. 28% in the second quarter. Of course, quarterly AFR may fluctuate, but they can also reflect trends worthy of further study.

Broken down by capacity, the report shows that the 8 TB and 10 TB models have the highest failure rates.
