According to news in the morning of August 4, Beijing time, Amazon today released its results for the second quarter of 2023, which ended at the end of June. Amazon's second-quarter net sales were $134.4 billion (currently about 964.992 billion yuan), up 11% from $121.2 billion a year earlier, according to the report. Net profit was $6.75 billion (currently about 48.465 billion yuan), compared with a net loss of $2.028 billion in the same period last year.

By contrast, on average, 37 analysts expect Amazon's second-quarter revenue to reach $131.5 billion. Amazon reported second-quarter revenue of $134.4 billion, higher than analysts had expected.

On average, 36 analysts expect Amazon's diluted earnings per share to reach 35 cents a share in the second quarter. Amazon reported diluted earnings of $0.65 per share in the second quarter, higher than analysts' expectations.

Second quarter results: net sales were $134.4 billion, up 11% from $121.2 billion in the same period last year. Excluding the $3 billion negative impact of currency movements, Amazon's net sales rose 11% in the second quarter from a year earlier.

By region, net sales of Amazon's North American division (the United States and Canada) were $82.5 billion in the second quarter, up 11% from a year earlier. Net sales at Amazon's international division (UK, Germany, France, Japan and China) were $29.7 billion in the second quarter, up 10 per cent from a year earlier.

Net sales from online stores by service and business type were $52.996 billion in the second quarter, up 4 per cent from $50.855 billion a year earlier. Excluding the impact of exchange rate changes, it increased by 5% compared with the same period last year.

Net sales from brick-and-mortar stores were $5.024 billion, up 6 per cent from $4.721 billion a year earlier, and up 7 per cent year-on-year, excluding exchange rate changes.

Net sales from third-party seller services were $32.332 billion, up 18% from $27.376 billion a year earlier. Excluding the impact of exchange rate changes, it grew by 18 per cent year-on-year.

Net sales from subscription services were $9.894 billion, up 14% from $8.716 billion a year earlier. Excluding the impact of exchange rate changes, it grew by 14 per cent year-on-year.

Net sales from advertising services were $10.683 billion, up 22% from $8.757 billion a year earlier. Excluding the impact of exchange rate changes, it grew by 22 per cent year-on-year.

Net sales of Amazon's AWS cloud service were $22.14 billion, up 12% from $19.739 billion a year earlier. Excluding the impact of exchange rate changes, it grew by 12 per cent year-on-year.

Net sales from other businesses were $1.344 billion, up 26% from $1.07 billion a year earlier, and up 26% year-on-year, excluding exchange rate changes.

Total operating expenses were $126.702 billion, compared with $117.917 billion in the same period last year.

Of this total, the cost of sales was $69.373 billion, compared with $66.424 billion in the same period last year.

Compliance expenditure was $21.305 billion, compared with $20.342 billion in the same period last year.

Spending on technology and infrastructure was $21.931 billion, compared with $18.072 billion in the same period last year.

Sales and marketing expenses were $10.745 billion, compared with $10.086 billion in the same period last year.

General and administrative expenses were $3.202 billion, compared with $2.903 billion in the same period last year.

Operating profit was $7.681 billion, compared with $3.317 billion a year earlier.

Of this total, Amazon's North American division made an operating profit of $3.2 billion, compared with an operating loss of $600 million a year earlier. Amazon's international division suffered an operating loss of $900 million, compared with an operating loss of $1.8 billion a year earlier. The operating profit of AWS cloud services was $5.4 billion, compared with $5.7 billion in the same period last year.

Net profit was $6.75 billion, compared with a net loss of $2.028 billion a year earlier.

Amazon's second-quarter net profit included a pre-tax valuation gain of $200m (included in non-operating expenses arising from its investment in Rivian Automotive common stock), compared with a pre-tax valuation loss of $3.9 billion a year earlier.

Diluted earnings per share were $0.65, compared with a diluted loss of $0.20 per share in the same period last year.

Cash flow in the 12 months to June 30, 2023, Amazon's operating cash flow was $61.8 billion (currently about 443.724 billion yuan), up 74% from a year earlier.

Amazon's free cash flow was $7.9 billion in the 12 months ended June 30, 2023. Amazon's free cash flow was $23.5 billion in the 12 months to June 30, 2022.

Performance outlook: Amazon expects net sales in the third quarter of 2023 to reach $138 billion to $143 billion (currently about 990.84 billion to 1.03 trillion yuan), up 9 to 13 percent from a year earlier.

Operating profit will be between $5.5 billion and $8.5 billion, compared with $2.5 billion in the same period last year.
