CTOnews.com, Aug. 4 (Xinhua)-- India on Thursday announced licensing requirements for imported laptops, tablets and personal computers, with immediate effect, in order to promote local manufacturing, Reuters reported.

The move could seriously affect the operations of companies such as Apple, Dell and Samsung in the Indian market.

India's previous regulations allow companies to import products such as laptops freely, and companies need a special license if they want to continue to sell these imports in India after the new rules come into effect.

Industry executives say the import licensing system in India means extending the waiting time for each product to enter the Indian market, especially considering applying in advance to meet sales demand during the holiday season.

The Indian government gave no reason for the move in its notice, but Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been promoting local manufacturing and curbing imports under his "made in India" plan.

Counterpoint, a research firm, estimates that India's laptop and PC market is worth $8 billion a year (CTOnews.com Note: currently about 57.44 billion yuan), of which 2/3 are imported.

Apple, Dell and Samsung did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Reuters.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a fiscal incentive plan of 170 billion rupees (currently about 14.739 billion yuan) in May to attract laptops, tablets and other hardware manufacturers to invest in local production.
