Thanks to CTOnews.com netizens and soft media users for 1520111 clue delivery! CTOnews.com, August 3 (Xinhua)-- Google's ChromeOS system is on the verge of a major change that will separate the operating system from the browser so that they can be updated independently and closer to Linux. The project, called Lacros, has been going on for two years, and according to About Chromebooks, this feature has been enabled by default in the beta version of ChromeOS 116, and a formal version is expected to be released this month.

Google ChromeOS is an operating system based on the Linux kernel developed by Google and is mainly used in low-end laptops and tablets. At present, the system interface of ChromeOS is the same as the web browser, which means that updating the browser means updating the whole system. The Lacros project will separate the system interface from the web browser, which is called ash-chrome (system interface) and lacros-chrome (web browser) respectively. In this way, users can choose to update their browser or operating system according to their needs without having to wait for Google to push the overall update.

CTOnews.com notes that the Lacros project also involves improvements to the ChromeOS operating system. Google documentation says, "Lacros can be thought of as' Linux chrome' with more Wayland support." Wayland is a new Linux graphics protocol, which can improve graphics performance and stability. ChromeOS used to use a homemade graphics protocol called "Freon", but now it will switch to Wayland, which is consistent with other desktop Linux systems.

On the browser side, ChromeOS will no longer use the Chrome browser tailored for ChromeOS, but will use the Linux version of the Chrome browser. In other words, the browser that users see on the Ubuntu system will be the browser on ChromeOS.

The Lacros project has been under development for about two years and can now be enabled by setting an option. But in version 116, this option has disappeared because it has become the default feature. Google has not officially confirmed the news, but the current code shows that the change is coming. Users may not notice any difference, but this feature will make it easier to update ChromeOS and may even extend the life of old equipment.
