Therefore, scientists have been looking for materials that can achieve superconductivity at room temperature, that is, room temperature superconductors.
Recently, the research team of Korea Quantum Energy Research Center announced that under atmospheric pressure, a modified lead apatite (LK-99, named after the initials of Lee and Kim) can behave as a superconductor below 400K (127K). The team published the results of their experiments in two papers and videos, and claimed to have applied for a patent. This news has aroused widespread concern and discussion in the international physics circle, and has also inspired scientific research institutions and individuals in many countries and regions to carry out repetitive experiments.
Now another Chinese team has announced the experimental results of reproducing LK-99 materials. Sun Yue, a professor at the School of Physics at Southeast University, posted a video on bilibili in the early morning of August 3, saying that his team had observed zero resistance in LK-99 materials under atmospheric pressure below 110K (- 163.15 ℃). This may be a very important evidence of its superconductivity, but they did not confirm the discovery of room temperature superconductors.
According to Sun Yue, the temperature of resistivity measurement begins to decrease from 300K (26.85 ℃), the current is 1 mA, and the four-lead method is used. The team measured a total of six samples, and zero resistance was observed in only one sample, while most of the other samples produced semiconductor behavior.
In addition, the team measured the Meissner effect of the sample with zero resistance, that is, complete diamagnetism, and no complete diamagnetism was observed. Meissner effect is the repulsive phenomenon of magnetic field in the process of superconductor phase transition from general state to superconducting state, which is regarded as an important feature of superconducting realization.
Sun Yue said that if the zero resistance of the sample is caused by superconductivity, the composition of superconductivity should be relatively low.
CTOnews.com previously reported that another Chinese scientist, Liu Xiaobing, a professor in the School of Physics and Engineering of Qufu normal University, told the interface reporter on the evening of August 2 that his team used the four-lead method to conduct a preliminary resistance test on the previously synthesized diamagnetic sample, and the test results found that the sample still had a large resistance in the range from room temperature to 50K (- 223.16 ℃). There is no sharp drop in resistance or zero resistance. Liu Xiaobing believes that this is a far cry from the zero resistance characteristic expected by "room temperature superconductivity".
At present, the LK-99 material of the relevant research team of Korea Quantum Energy Research Center has not been verified by a third party. Therefore, their room temperature superconducting experimental results need more evidence and data to support, but also need more reproduction and review to verify. Room temperature superconductivity is a dream of physics, but it is also a huge challenge, which requires scientists to continue to explore and innovate.
