Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--

CTOnews.com, August 2 (Xinhua)-- it is well known that electric vehicles will be affected in cold weather, but even in the current warmer conditions, the performance of some pure electric models in the United States has not met expectations.

The non-profit organization Consumer report tested the claimed mileage of Tesla's Model Y long-range version, Ford Electric Horse Mustang Mach-E long-range version, Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Volkswagen ID.4 Pro S models at three temperatures to see how cold weather affects batteries.

The test results were not surprising. The endurance of these electric vehicles was greatly affected in cold weather, but the most prominent of the four cars was Tesla Model Y, which failed to reach the EPA mileage of 326 miles (CTOnews.com Note: about 524.65 km) even if the external temperature was not low enough to affect the battery.

In the Consumer report test, continuous cruising tests were carried out on the highway at a speed of 70mph, and the actual mileage calculated by Model Y was reduced to 186mph (299km) after a round trip.

By comparison, the Mach-E, the electric horse, has an official range of 270km (434km) and 188mph (302km) in cold weather (the average temperature is-8C), while the EPA's 256mph (412km) modern Ioniq 5 actually has 183mph (294km) in cold weather.

The Volkswagen ID.4, meanwhile, has an EPA rated range of 240km (386km) and an actual mileage of 170km (273km) in cold weather.

In mild weather conditions with temperatures of 18 degrees Celsius, the range of all four electric vehicles has been increased by about 50 to 70 miles, but has always been below the official figure.

The Consumer report then tested it in warm weather at 29 degrees Celsius and showed that some models could meet or even exceed EPA standards. For example, the Mustang Mach-E and ID.4 exceeded the EPA range, reaching 275mph and 256km, respectively, while the Ioniq 5 was 2 miles less than official estimates.

But at the same time, the mileage calculated by Model Y in such warm weather is 274km (441km), well below EPA's estimate of 326km (524km).

According to Consumer report, Tesla Model Y is the lightest of the four models, with a difference of more than 500lbs from the heaviest ID.4 and 200lbs from the Ioniq 5 with a similarly sized battery, while the Ioniq 5 has a battery capacity of 72.6kWh and Tesla estimates 81kWh).

In order to get real mileage results, Consumer report recharges all night before each test, ensures that its power is maintained at 100%, and then drives on the same route, with adaptive cruise control set to 70 mph and mechanisms such as energy recovery set to a minimum.

After the car returned to the test center, the engineer recorded and analyzed the remaining mileage shown by various electric vehicles and inferred the total mileage for a particular journey with reference to the ratio of mileage used to mileage throughout the journey. Of course, this ratio is also compared with the mileage per mile under SOC (percentage of battery charge).

It is said that in order to simulate a typical user scenario, the batteries of all models have not been completely exhausted, as consumer reports point out that even tankers rarely drive without fuel at all.
