Thanks to CTOnews.com netizen OC_Formula for the clue delivery! CTOnews.com, August 2, according to TechPowerUp, PCI-SIG today announced the formation of a new working group to develop PCI Express (PCIe) technology over optical connections.

According to reports, Nathan Brookwood, a researcher at Insight 64, said: "Optical connectivity will be an important advance in PCIe architecture because they will achieve higher performance, lower power consumption, farther coverage and lower latency. Many markets and applications with high data demand, such as cloud and quantum computing, very large-scale data centers and high-performance computing, will benefit from PCIe architectures that utilize optical connectivity."

Al Yanes, President and Chairman of PCI-SIG, said: "PCI-SIG welcomes comments from the industry and invites all PCI-SIG members to join the Optical connection working Group to share their expertise and help develop specific working group goals and requirements."

The existing PCI-SIG working group will continue to move towards the 128GT/s data rate in the PCIe 7.0specification.

As previously reported by IT House, PCI-SIG finalized the draft of PCIe Gen7 (PCIe 7.0) v0.3 in June this year. According to the design, its bandwidth is twice as high as that of PCIe 6.0. the speed is increased from 64 GT/s to 128 GT/s. It also uses PAM4 modulation signaling, the coding mode is 1b / 1b, and is compatible with all previous PCIe versions.
