According to reports, as one of the landmark achievements, the reflector laser target maintenance robot jointly developed by the Jing Fengshui Research Group of the Institute of Automation of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the National Astronomical Observatory of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Guizhou Radio Astronomical Observatory can efficiently complete the tasks of cleaning, disassembling, and reassembling the laser target, successfully realizing the fully automatic maintenance of the laser target on the FAST reflection surface, and providing operation and maintenance support for the "Chinese Sky Eye."
The 500m aperture spherical radio telescope (FAST) is the largest single aperture radio telescope with the highest observation accuracy in the world. 2225 laser targets are distributed on the reflector of FAST, which is an important part of its control system, just like the "eyes" of the reflector, which needs to be maintained and replaced regularly.
However, the reflector is made of aluminum plates only 1mm thick, which is difficult to bear the weight of a normal adult, so it can only be maintained manually by microgravity Spiderman hanging balloons, which sounds a bit like the mirror cleaner of "Chinese Sun".
According to the Institute of Automation of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the robot system as a whole consists of a target maintenance and execution system, an omni-directional motion platform and a navigation system. It can carry out omni-directional walking of the reflector, accurate three-dimensional measurement of the target posture, disassembly and grasping of the old target, assembly and tightening of the new target, and can independently complete the target replacement and cleaning tasks. Carry out fully automatic target maintenance.
The 500m aperture spherical radio telescope (Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope) was built using the depressions in the karst area of Guizhou as the telescope site. It was proposed by Chinese astronomer Nan Rendong in 1994. It took 22 years to build and was put into operation at sunset on September 25, 2016. It is the largest aperture and most sensitive single-aperture radio telescope in the world, with a receiving area of 30 standard football fields.
