3D artist Michael Johnson explains how NVIDIA RTX technology provides him with the tools he needs to create works that inspire his family.

Editor's note: this article is part of our weekly NVIDIA Studio Creative acceleration series, which aims to introduce invited artists, provide creative tips and tips, and demonstrate how NVIDIA Studio technology can improve creative workflows.

The artwork created by Michael Johnson, the chief artist and 3D expert of NVIDIA, has exquisite and rich details, which not only amazes people on the technical level, but also resonates with the audience. This is fully demonstrated in his latest work, Father-Son Collaboration, which draws inspiration from his son's vivid imagination and is the highlight of this week's "NVIDIA Studio Creative acceleration" program.

"I like to use art to bring joy and good memories to others," Johnson said. "Outstanding works of art make me realize the uniqueness of being a human being and an artist. Art can subvert people's views and make them feel completely different."

The ideas of young people inspire generations of artists.

"the original intention of creating this work was to inspire my son to teach him how to perceive things and how to draw inspiration from other people's works of art," Johnson said. Because he can feel that although his son likes graffiti, he always feels that his work is not good enough.

"I want to show him what I think of his work and the inspiration I get from it," Johnson said.

Through this project, Johnson also plans to demonstrate how workflows supported by NVIDIA Studio can help art studios and conceptual artists around the world.

Happy, happy, lovely creatures.

NVIDIA RTX GPU technology plays a vital role in enabling Johnson to accelerate the realization of its great ideas. "as an artist, I am concerned about quick feedback and stability," he said. "the NVIDIA A6000 RTX graphics card speeds up the rendering process so that I can quickly implement iterations."

For the work "Father-Son Collaboration", Johnson first opens Autodesk Maya to complete the basic 3D shape modeling of biology. He uses GPU accelerated windows to achieve fast interactive 3D modeling.

Next, he imports the model into ZBrush for further sculpting, freeform modeling, and detail processing. "after finishing the final sculpting, I imported the model into the Rizom-Lab IV software for UV deployment," Johnson said. UV mapping refers to the process of texture mapping by projecting the surface of a 3D model onto a 2D image. This makes it easier for him to texture and color the model in subsequent creative workflows. Video link

Johnson then applies standard custom textures and shaders to the character with the help of Adobe Substance 3D Painter.

"Substance 3D Painter is excellent because it shows the final appearance of the texture directly, and I don't need to import the file into the external renderer," Johnson said.

His GPU can achieve RTX accelerated light and ambient light shading and baking, and can optimize the material in just a few seconds.

When the texture is applied, Johnson imports the model back into Autodesk Maya to adjust the hair, decoration, lighting, and rendering. When dealing with fur and fur, he uses Autodesk Maya's built-in instantiation tool XGen. Autodesk Maya also supports third-party GPU acceleration renderers such as Chaos V-Ray, OTOY OctaneRender, and Maxon Redshift.

Johnson added: "Redshift is an excellent rendering software, and the powerful GPU can greatly speed up its rendering speed." Using Redshift RTX accelerated final frame rendering and AI-enabled OptiX noise reduction to export files can save a lot of time.

Johnson put the finishing touches to "Father-Son Collaboration" in Adobe Photoshop. After using more than 30 GPU acceleration features such as blurred galleries, object selection, perspective distortion, etc., he successfully applied the background and added minor retouches to complete the work.

Finally, Johnson shared the work, and as he hoped, he succeeded in evoking the joy, awe and wonder of his son.

The concept in the son's mind becomes a work of art created by the father himself.

"unlike other activities in life, artistic creation is one of the few unique experiences without a clear goal, because it focuses on the process rather than the result," Johnson said. "during this period, you absorb new knowledge every day, grow, and look at things from a different perspective."
