Thanks to CTOnews.com netizens Wu Yanzu in South China for the delivery of clues! CTOnews.com, August 1 (Xinhua)-- Samsung's Galaxy SmartTag 2 Bluetooth tracker has appeared on the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) website, with a flat oval device with a huge key ring hole at the top that looks a bit like a cigar cutter. If this is a normal keyring-sized hole, it means the device is twice the size of Apple's AirTag.

Galaxy SmartTag is a Bluetooth tracker launched by Samsung, similar to Tile or AirTag, which can be used to find nearby items, such as keys, wallets, etc., and the previous version could only be used with Samsung phones. The new device will include Ultra Wideband (UWB) technology, which can locate the device more accurately. When the device is far away, you need to rely on the nearby smartphone network to update the location information.

The new device also supports the Bluetooth 5.3 standard, which is more energy efficient than the old Bluetooth 5.1. The device was expected to be unveiled at Samsung's Galaxy Fold 5 launch last week, but it didn't show up, and it's not clear when it will be officially launched.

Android Bluetooth trackers, which do not have their own GPS modules or Internet access, will become more competitive when Google launches its own tracking network, but relies on nearby smartphones to provide data and location information. As long as the tracker is compatible with nearby smartphones, it can even use other people's smartphones to form an anonymous, crowdsourced network of data and locations. Apple's AirTag can update location information with any nearby iPhone and has a huge network. Google's Android network also plans to use this approach and allow third-party hardware vendors to access it. Once launched, it will become the largest network in the world. Google plans to launch the network through Google Play services rather than operating system updates, so it can cover 3 billion Android phones.

CTOnews.com noted that several previous Galaxy Tag models launched by Samsung can only build networks using modern Samsung phones, and it is not clear whether Samsung would like to join Google's larger network, but the network does need a heavyweight hardware partner. It is reported that Tile will join the network in the future, but apart from that, the others are all small manufacturers.
