CTOnews.com, Aug. 1-A leaked internal memo shows that even under the impact of artificial intelligence chat technologies such as ChatGPT, Google still has high hopes for its smart assistant Google Assistant. The memo shows that Google is applying the latest large language model (LLM) technology to Google Assistant to make it "super-enhanced".

CTOnews.com noted that Google introduced a lot about artificial intelligence at the developer conference in May this year. However, Google didn't introduce much information about Google Assistant at the conference. In the world of artificial intelligence chat technologies such as ChatGPT, Bing Chat and even Google's own Bard, Google Assistant seems to have few opportunities, and some question whether Google Assistant is doomed to failure.

But that doesn't seem to be the case, and the memo, which was circulated internally among Google Assistant, Bard and related teams, explains some of the company's ongoing restructuring to "explore what a super-enhanced Google Assistant powered by the latest LLM technology would look like." Google says it is "deeply committed" to Google Assistant and knows it is the key to helping meet "people's strong demand for auxiliary, conversational technologies to improve their lives". The memo also said the company would make the journey "from the mobile side".

At present, Google Assistant on the Android side has provided a function supported by LLM technology: webpage content summary. It is likely that many of the upcoming LLM technical features will be applied on Android / iOS first.

In theory, these LLM technologies will also appear in smart home products driven by Google Assistant, such as smart speakers and smart displays. However, these systems are not mentioned in the memorandum. In addition, the memo also confirms that some team members will be eliminated. Google gives affected employees 60 days to find other jobs within the company.
