Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com, July 31 (Xinhua) the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has developed a "nanometer rectangular superconducting diode", which transmits current more efficiently, so it can reduce the energy consumption of high-power computing systems. The related paper has been published in APS.
CTOnews.com, a research team at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (▲) Note: diodes are devices that transmit current in one direction. Modern computer chips usually contain billions of diode-like components called transistors. However, with the increase of the number of such components, the problem of chip energy consumption gradually appears.
Therefore, the manufacture of superconductor diodes has always been a hot topic in physics, because superconductors have no resistance when transmitting current below a certain low temperature, and their efficiency is higher than that of ordinary diodes.
It is reported that the researchers were inspired by a kind of particle called Mayorana fermion and developed a series of nanoscale rectangular superconducting diodes. The first generation superconducting diodes are composed of a layer of nanoscale superconductor vanadium. The second generation superconducting diodes layer the superconductor and the ferromagnet, and then apply a small magnetic field to magnetize the ferromagnet, resulting in a stronger diode effect.
Although the whole project is in the early development stage, the current experimental results have shown that the hardware energy efficiency of the superconducting diode has reached about twice that of the competition, and is expected to contribute to the development of quantum computing technology while significantly reducing the energy consumption of hardware computing, according to the physical Review KuaiBao (Physical Review Letters) website of the ▲ Tu Yuan MIT research team.
The superconducting diode project is generally encouraged in the industry, but Jagadeesh Moodera, a senior research scientist in the Physics Department of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, believes that this kind of nano-rectangular superconducting diode is about 1000 times smaller than the diameter of human hair, so he said that in the future, more finished products can be made using fewer raw materials. "millions of nano-rectangular superconducting diodes can be made on a single silicon wafer."
Christoph Strunk, a professor at the University of Regensburg in Germany, claimed that the nano-rectangular superconducting diode will have great potential in future applications. This work is attractive both from the perspective of basic research and from the perspective of commercial applications.
