CTOnews.com, July 30 (Xinhua) British carmaker Aston Martin will launch a plug-in hybrid version of its core sports car model in the future, using technology provided by its shareholder Mercedes-Benz, according to British carmaker Aston Martin's medium-term product strategy.

Aston Martin's first plug-in hybrid will be the 2024 supercar Valhalla, followed by electrified versions of the company's current Vantage, DB12 and DBS models from 2026.

The news was announced when Aston Martin released its financial report for the first half of 2023, which showed a significant increase in revenue and profits. Lawrence Strol, chairman of the company, announced in an accompanying statement: "our electrification journey will begin with Valhalla, our first plug-in hybrid supercar, and we plan to expand our plug-in hybrid models to our core models, which will bridge the transition from internal combustion engines to pure electric vehicles."

Strol later confirmed to Autocar that the hybrid strategy would apply to all cars and would use the electrified drive system provided by Mercedes. Mercedes has been providing engines and infotainment systems for Aston Martin since 2016. CTOnews.com notes that the V8 engines currently used by Aston Martin are those used by super hybrid models such as the Mercedes-AMG GT 63 E-Performance and the Mercedes-AMG S63 E-Performance, and that Aston Martin is likely to use a variant of this system in his plug-in hybrid.

Of course, Aston Martin has used this system in its first plug-in hybrid, the Valhalla. In the Mercedes-AMG super hybrid, the twin-turbocharged 4.0L V8 engine combined with a motor mounted on the rear axle produces a total output of about 800hp and torque of more than 1000 lb-ft. Lithium-ion batteries installed in the trunk (13.1 kWh for the S63 and 6.1kWh for the GT 63) offer pure electric mileage of 21 miles and 8 miles, respectively, and Aston Martin will no doubt use battery packs of different capacities depending on the location of their models. For example, a larger capacity battery pack may be used in a DBX SUV that pays more attention to luxury performance, while a smaller, lighter battery pack may be used in an electrified Vantage.
