CTOnews.com July 30 news, the latest report of the International Semiconductor Industry Association shows that global silicon wafer shipments in the second quarter of 2023 increased by 2.0% month-on-month to 3.331 billion square inches, down 10.1% from 3.704 billion square inches in the same period last year.

The semiconductor industry continues to grapple with excess inventory in various market segments, and as a result, Q2 silicon wafer shipments are lagging behind their peak in 2022. Wafer shipments remained stable quarter-on-quarter in the second quarter, with 300mm wafers showing quarterly growth across all wafer size.

After growing 7.2 percent in 2022, the global semiconductor industry is expected to grow 4.8 percent in 2023 and 5.6 percent in 2024, SEMI said.

As more and more suppliers provide foundry services and global capacity increases, SEMI expects factories to lead semiconductor expansion with investment of US $43.4 billion (approximately RMB 298.158 billion) in 2023, down 12.1% year-on-year, and will grow 12.4% year-on-year to US $48.8 billion (approximately RMB 335.256 billion) in 2024.

SEMI expects Memory memory chips to rank second in global spending in 2023, although investment in this area will increase to $28.2 billion in 2024 despite a year-on-year decline of 44.4% to $17.1 billion.

In addition, unlike other market segments, SEMI forecasts that spending in the automotive market will grow by 1.3% to $9.7 billion in 2023, while investment in the sector will remain flat next year.
