CTOnews.com, July 30 (Xinhua) Ford Motor Company has turned to hybrid cars after losing billions of dollars in electric vehicles. Jim Farley, the company's chief executive, said in his second-quarter results on Thursday that more hybrid models would be launched in the future.

Ford recently reported second-quarter earnings, indicating a widening loss in its electric vehicle division. However, Ford has not abandoned its plans for electric vehicles, although the company said on Thursday that the promotion of electric vehicles may take longer than previously expected.

"We are surprised by the popularity of the hybrid system of Fmur150 pickup trucks," Farley said on Ford's second-quarter earnings call. " More than 10% of Fmur150 pickup customers choose hybrid models, and the proportion is increasing, he said. Ford also offers a hybrid version of a small Maverick pickup. The car is more successful, Farley says, with more than half of Maverick buyers (56 per cent) opting for an optional hybrid system of $1500 (CTOnews.com note: currently about 10740 yuan) rather than a standard four-cylinder engine.

So why is Ford doubling its investment in hybrids at a time when the industry is moving aggressively towards all-electric cars? "what customers really like is when we adopt a hybrid system that is more efficient for certain work cycles and add new features because of the battery," Farley said. " One of the new features is Ford's "Pro Power Onboard" system, which allows customers to use the power of the vehicle through the sockets of pickups to power tools or refrigerators on the site without having to carry additional generators.

"We see a lot of customers like this combination of using batteries to do something other than moving vehicles, so we're just listening to the market," Farley said. "

Ford has trumpeted the functionality of its all-electric Fmur150 Lightning pickup, which can power the entire house for a few days. Perhaps after listening to customers, Ford found that the feature was more popular than people wanted for all-electric vehicles. As executives pointed out on Thursday, the adoption of electric vehicles has been slower than expected. So, in the meantime, Ford could offer an intermediate option for drivers who crave electricity but have concerns about electric cars, offering hybrid models in their internal combustion engine lineup.
