CTOnews.com, July 30 (Xinhua) according to the new regulations of the U.S. Department of Energy, from August 1, the United States will ban the sale of incandescent bulbs and promote energy-efficient light bulbs instead. The move aims to save energy, reduce carbon emissions and reduce consumers' electricity bills.

Incandescent bulbs are inefficient, emitting only 12 to 18 lumens per watt, while the new standard approved by the US Department of Energy last year requires at least 45 lumens per watt. By contrast, energy-efficient light bulbs such as LED are at least 75% more efficient and last 25 times longer than incandescent bulbs. The U.S. Department of Energy estimates that if energy-efficient light bulbs were used nationwide for a year, it could save $3 billion (CTOnews.com Note: currently about 21.48 billion yuan) in electricity bills.

As early as 2007, then US President George W. Bush signed the Energy Independence and Security Act, which required household light bulbs to improve the efficiency of about 25%, but did not explicitly ban incandescent light bulbs. In 2017, the US government added two new regulations that had been planned to phase out incandescent bulbs and other special bulbs, such as candle-shaped bulbs for chandeliers, in January 2020. However, during the Trump administration, these rules were blocked by the US Department of Energy.

However, not everyone supports banning incandescent bulbs. Texas Republican Congressman Pat Fallon said this was "another example of the regulatory burden the Biden administration has placed on American families." Rep. Scott Perry, Republican of Pennsylvania, said last week that it was Biden's "regulatory attack" on household appliances.

In contrast, Joe Vukovic, an advocate for the Natural Resources Defense Council, said the United States "should have eliminated inefficient and outdated incandescent bulbs". Charlie Harak, a lawyer at the National Consumer Law Center, says the use of energy-efficient light bulbs is good for families who are "overburdened with energy."

It is worth noting that in 2020, about 30% of households in the United States used incandescent or halogen incandescent bulbs. Incandescent bulbs are also considered to be one of the factors contributing to climate change. The U.S. Department of Energy estimates that about 5% of the world's carbon greenhouse gas emissions come from lighting, while inefficient light bulbs, such as incandescent bulbs, emit more because they generate more heat. The new rules are expected to reduce carbon emissions by 222 million metric tons over the next 30 years-equivalent to the emissions generated by 28 million households in a year.
