San Francisco city officials say permits are required to change letters or symbols on buildings or to install Logo on top of buildings for design and security reasons.

The "X" Logo appeared after San Francisco police stopped workers from dismantling Twitter's iconic bird Logo from the side of the building on Monday. The police said at the time that workers did not block the sidewalk with duct tape to prevent things from falling and hurting pedestrians.

Patrick Hannan, a spokesman for the building inspection department, said earlier this week that any replacement of letters or symbols would require a permit to ensure that it was "consistent with the historical nature of the building" and that additions were safely connected to the Logo.
