CTOnews.com, July 29 (Xinhua)-- Microsoft added GPU to the risk factors for service outages in data centers for the first time in its recently released results, according to CNBC.

"the development of our data center business depends on building land permits and predictable energy, network and server supplies, including the availability of graphics processing units (GPU) and other components," Pexels Microsoft said in the financial report.

This is one of the three paragraphs in the financial report that mentioned GPU, but Microsoft did not mention GPU once in last year's report. A similar statement did not appear in the recent results of other big technology companies.

As part of a complex partnership, OpenAI relies on Microsoft's Azure cloud service to run ChatGPT and various AI model calculations. Microsoft also began to use OpenAI's model to enhance existing products such as Outlook, Word and Bing by generating AI.

These efforts and interest in ChatGPT have prompted Microsoft to seek more GPU than expected. Microsoft has begun to seek more GPU support outside its data center after signing an agreement with Nvidia-backed CoreWeave to lease GPU as a cloud service to third-party developers.

At the same time, Microsoft spent years building its own custom AI chips. CTOnews.com previously reported that the focus on ChatGPT prompted Microsoft to speed up the deployment of its chip business, with Google, Amazon and Meta all releasing their own AI chips.

Microsoft CFO Amy Hood said on an analyst conference call that Microsoft expected to continue to increase capital spending this quarter to cover data centers, network hardware, CPU and GPU.
