CTOnews.com, July 29 (Xinhua)-- NASA released a dynamic update today, saying that Voyager 2's antenna angle shifted by 2 degrees after carrying out its routine command sequence, making it impossible to send data back to Earth and cut off communication with the ground.

NASA's command controllers sent orders to Voyager 2 on July 21, which is now about 12.4 billion miles (19.9 billion kilometers) from Earth and is moving deeper into interstellar space.

NASA said the glitch disrupted communications between the probe and the Deep Space Network (DSN), but the agency expects it to be a minor problem, which has occurred several times before.

NASA says Voyager 2 needs to be programmed every year to make sure its antennas can point to Earth. The next reset is scheduled for October 15, 79 days from now.

CTOnews.com learned from supplementary information on NASA's website that Voyager 1 is currently nearly 15 billion miles (24 billion kilometers) from Earth and is still operating normally.

Voyager 2 is a NASA unmanned interstellar spacecraft launched on August 20, 1977, which is still in normal operation today. It is not only the longest-running space probe in history, but also one of the spacecraft built by human beings to travel the longest distance.
