CTOnews.com, July 28, according to Yonhap News Agency, Lu Taiwen, head of Samsung Electronics' mobile business, said at a press conference in Seoul, South Korea today that this year will be the turning point for Samsung Electronics to make folding phones mainstream products, and quoted reports from several industry research institutions that global sales of foldable phones are expected to exceed 100 million units a year in the next few years.

According to ▲ Touyuan Samsung's website, Lu Taiwen, Samsung aims to make its collapsible phones account for more than 20 per cent of sales of Galaxy's flagship models this year. In addition, Samsung Electronics seeks to increase the global sales share of foldable phones by 25% by 2025, become a pillar of performance along with the flagship Galaxy S series, and make foldable phones a key category of high-end models.

Samsung Electronics had about 77 per cent of the foldable phone market last year, according to research firm Canalys. Shipments of foldable phones are expected to grow by more than 50% this year to 21.4 million units and 48.1 million units by 2027, according to the IDC report.

Mr Lu said Samsung's priority was to make foldable phones a mass-market product, and whether this could be achieved and when it would be achieved would have a bearing on the company's profits.

In order to reach a wider range of users, Lu Taiwen stressed that Samsung Electronics has worked with global partners to reduce the cost of manufacturing foldable phones. He also pointed out that nearly 100 million collapsible phones have been sold since the launch of the previous generation of foldable phones last summer, and he expects the latest model to help Samsung secure its market leadership position, but did not mention specific sales targets.

Samsung Electronics' mobile division made a profit of 3.04 trillion won in the second quarter (CTOnews.com Note: currently about 16.994 billion yuan), down from the first quarter, mainly due to a decline in sales of Galaxy S23 phones from February to the second quarter.
