CTOnews.com, July 27 (Xinhua)-- the research team of the Institute of crop Science of the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences and Nanjing Agricultural University led by Wan Jianmin, academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, announced today that after 13 years of cooperative research, the loci causing hybrid sterility in indica and japonica rice have been systematically identified, and one of the most dominant loci has been cloned and analyzed in depth. The locus is composed of two closely linked genes, and its genetic effect follows the natural gene-driven model.

▲ Map Source Institute of crop Science, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (the same below) according to the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, this study clarified the mechanism of rice hybrid sterility at the molecular level, solved the mystery of rice reproductive isolation, and revealed the evolution of genes and their distribution among different rice germplasm resources, providing theoretical and technical support for using intersubspecific heterosis to cultivate high-yielding varieties. The relevant research results are published in the journal Cell in the form of a long research article.

The utilization of crop heterosis is an important way to greatly increase grain yield. Rice is divided into two subspecies: indica rice and japonica rice. Japonica rice is mostly planted in the north of China and indica rice is planted in the south. Since the 1970s, the hybrid rice developed by Mr. Yuan Longping has mainly made use of the heterosis within the subspecies of indica rice, which has greatly increased the yield of rice and brought about the second "green revolution". It has made outstanding contributions to the food security of our country and even the world. Generally speaking, the farther the genetic relationship between varieties, the more obvious the heterosis.

If super hybrid rice can be bred between indica rice and japonica rice, it is predicted that it can increase the yield by more than 15% compared with the existing hybrid rice, so how to make use of the super advantage between subspecies has always been concerned by breeders. However, there is serious reproductive isolation between indica rice and japonica rice, and their hybrids often show hybrid sterility, which is one of the biggest obstacles to the utilization of heterosis. This study is another breakthrough in the field of hybrid sterility after the selfish gene (Science, 2018).

Zu Kang, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, believes that this achievement not only defines the gene loci and genetic modules that control traits genetically, but also analyzes the details of it from the point of view of cell biology and biochemistry. This provides a very important theoretical basis for super hybrid rice to enter a new stage of complete molecular design in the future. This is also a very important reason why this achievement is a milestone.
