Shulou(Shulou.com)11/24 Report--
CTOnews.com, July 27 (Xinhua)-- NASA will provide $150 million (CTOnews.com Note: currently about 1.072 billion yuan) to 11 different U.S. companies to promote the development of potentially revolutionary space exploration technologies, including power systems for lunar outposts.
The funds will be distributed to the 11 companies to support projects that will help humans gain a foothold on the moon and other deep space areas.
"partnering with the commercial aerospace industry allows our NASA to take advantage of American innovation and ingenuity," said Bill Nielsen, director of NASA. "the technology NASA invests in today has the potential to be the basis for future exploration."
The funds will be allocated by 11 companies according to their size, accounting for at least 10% to 25% of the total cost of the project, of which nearly $35 million (currently about 250 million yuan) will be used by Jeff Bezos's Blue Origin to continue to develop its "Blue Alchemist" (the technology aims to make solar panels from lunar soil). Pittsburgh-based Astrobotic will receive $34.6 million for power transmission from the lander to the rover.
"the company's CubeRover will pull out more than half a mile of high-voltage transmission lines that can be used to transfer electricity from the production system to the lunar habitat or work area," NASA wrote in a statement.
The other three selected projects include the construction of dwellings, roads or other infrastructure from lunar rocks and lunar soil. Given that NASA is working to build sustainable outposts on the moon through its Artemis program, the demand is not surprising.
"our cooperation with industry may be the cornerstone of mankind's return to the moon under Artemis," the acting deputy director of the NASA Space Technology Mission Administration, Prasendesai, said in the same statement.
"by creating new incentive opportunities, we hope to push key technologies to the finish line so that they can be used in future missions," Desai said. "these innovative partnerships will help advance the ability to make sustainable exploration on the moon possible."
