Thank you, Mr. Air, a netizen of CTOnews.com, for your clue delivery! CTOnews.com, July 27 (Xinhua) Honda unveiled its first personal electric motorcycle, the EM1 e, in Japan last month. Honda said the new car will enter Southeast Asian markets such as Indonesia at its next stop, which is Honda's first electric two-wheeled car for the Indonesian market.

The EM1 e electric motorcycle, which is scheduled to go on sale in Japan on Aug. 24, costs about 300000 yen (CTOnews.com Note: currently about 15300 yuan) and has a range of 53 kilometers.

Although the specifications of the Indonesian model have not been disclosed, a Honda representative called it "a pioneer in exploring customer responses and needs as the first mass market model".

Honda also said it would launch another model to Indonesia within this year, and could launch more models next year, with plans to sell seven electric motorcycles by 2030 and reach its sales target of 1 million by that year.

A total of 5.22 million two-wheelers were sold in the country last year, according to the Indonesian Motorcycle Industry Association. It is said that models in Indonesia will include both replaceable and non-replaceable batteries, and Honda is considering new investment in Indonesian factories.

Honda plans to sell 3.5 million electric motorcycles worldwide by 2030, about 30 per cent of them from Indonesia. The company plans to electrify all its motorcycles by mid-2045.

According to Statista of Germany, the motorcycle market in Southeast Asia reached 10.6 million in 2022, ranking third in the world, after China (1550 million) and India (12.63 million). Indonesia accounts for more than half of the region's market, with sales of more than 5 million vehicles.

Honda had 88% of the Indonesian motorcycle market by the end of the fiscal year in March 2023, according to Honda. Coupled with the support of competitors such as Yamaha, Japanese brands control more than 90 per cent of the market. They also dominate other parts of Southeast Asia.

"Japanese companies have a high share of gasoline vehicles and have made slow progress in electrification," said Hirotaka Uchida, a partner at Arthur D. Little, a US consultancy. "in response to the challenges from Chinese and local competitors, market leader Honda has begun to transform itself into electrification."
